Energy, feelings, thoughts and food
What you think, what you feel, what you eat and how you rest are not separate matters. The body hears all of it, all the time. Here is how.
One conversation
There is a whole field of medicine, psychoneuroimmunology, that studies how the brain, the nervous system, hormones and the immune system talk to each other. They share the same messengers. A thought can change a hormone; a hormone can change how your immune cells behave.
Stress
In a short burst they save your life: energy up, focus sharp. Switched on for months, they disturb sleep, digestion, blood sugar and repair.
Studies of long-term caregivers found that their wounds healed more slowly and their immune responses were weaker.
A large study of more than 17,000 adults linked difficult childhood experiences with more illness decades later.
Digestion, detoxification and tissue repair happen best when the nervous system feels safe. That is why calm is not a luxury.
Feelings
Every emotion is also physical: fear speeds the heart and tightens the breath; grief weighs on the chest; anger heats and tenses. When feelings have no space to be felt, the body keeps holding them, and holding takes energy.
Thoughts
The placebo effect is one of the best-documented findings in medicine: when people expect relief, the body often produces real changes in pain and symptoms. Its mirror, the nocebo effect, shows that fearful expectations can make symptoms worse. Thoughts are not just in the head. They are instructions the body takes seriously.
The gut
A long nerve connects the gut and the brain, and most of its fibres carry messages from the gut up to the brain, not the other way.
Most of the body’s serotonin is made in the gut, not in the brain.
Trillions of bacteria in the gut help digest food, train the immune system, and produce substances that affect inflammation and mood.
Fibre from plants feeds the helpful microbes, which turn it into short-chain fatty acids that calm inflammation.
Food
Every meal sends signals: to your blood sugar, your hormones, your microbes and your inflammation. Rapid sugar spikes and crashes are felt as tiredness, irritability and cravings. Large studies link diets high in ultra-processed food with worse physical and mental health, and diets rich in whole plants with better.
And your cells make their energy in the mitochondria, from what you eat and the oxygen you breathe. Food is, quite literally, the raw material of your energy.
